This award truly means the world to me. But this is just the beginning. I’m more motivated than ever to keep championing girls in tech and supporting individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.

Aurelia Brzezowska, BSc (Hons) Computer Science

Aurelia Brzezowska, 21, is a trailblazer in Computer Science at University of Staffordshire, dedicated to promoting diversity through her passion for the subject.

This weekend, Aurelia was named ‘Young STEAM Personality of the Year’ at the Inspirational Youth Awards, which shine a spotlight on young people aged 16-25 who are creating meaningful change in their communities.

The award celebrates a young individual who has demonstrated exceptional achievements and contributions in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

Aurelia said: “Honestly, I think I’m still in a bit of denial! This year, the awards went national, so to be recognised on such a large scale for my volunteering and academic work to support students is incredibly meaningful.

“The ceremony was amazing, seeing so many inspirational young people around us was empowering. When my name was called out, my heart dropped and I was prouder than ever to represent the University.”

In high school, Aurelia began mentoring young learners from lower socio-economic backgrounds and encouraging more girls to pursue STEAM subjects. Aurelia received an Amazon Future Engineer bursary to support her BSc (Hons) Computer Science studies at University of Staffordshire and has continued her work to support others.

Aurelia co-founded the Women in STEM Society and led the Computing Society at the University. She has organised career events, connecting students with industry leaders to enhance employability.

As a Department Representative for Computing, Aurelia has advocated for better learning experiences, diversity and employability, driving a 30% increase in student engagement and implementing improvements in key modules.

Aurelia’s influence also extends beyond the University and she recently joined the UK Cyber Security Council as a Youth Advisory Member. As a STEM Computing Ambassador, she has represented the University at high-profile events like Women in TEC and Bright Network's Illuminate, inspiring young women to pursue STEAM careers. Through Byte Queens, Aurelia actively works to bridge the gender gap in tech and she conducts cybersecurity Q&A sessions in state schools, to inspire the next generation.

“As the child of a single parent and immigrant who grew up in the UK, I've seen firsthand the lack of opportunities that children and students have coming from state schools,” Aurelia commented.

“Championing STEAM needs to start early and continue as we age to ensure that no one feels left out. We need to keep bridging the gender gap to ensure that voices are heard and no one is left behind. Let's continue making STEAM more accessible to everyone, after all there's an entire talent pool out there that is yet to invent, contribute and further tech.”

Aurelia added: "This award truly means the world to me. But this is just the beginning. I’m more motivated than ever to keep championing girls in tech and supporting individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.”
