Learn outside the classroom

Learn beyond the classroom with our Woodlands Nursery and Forest School practitioners

Train to teach or build a career supporting children and families. If you want to make a lasting difference to people’s lives, education is where it starts.

Our graduates have gone on to a wide variety of roles, including becoming primary teachers, nursery managers, inclusion experts or specialist support workers within councils, charities and schools. Through University of Staffordshire, they gained the skills and confidence to succeed.

Our degrees combine academic insights with extensive professional experience. You’ll learn from former teachers and school leaders, develop practical skills through placements, and can draw on the latest research into classroom practice.

You’ll get other hands-on opportunities too. Our students have created story trails for young children, overseen community projects and gained inspiration for outdoor learning ideas in our Forest School.

Careers and connections

Education is about more than the classroom.

Our graduates go on to become primary teachers, early years practitioners, education officers, SEND specialists, family support workers and learning mentors. Others progress into leadership, policy, postgraduate study or specialist areas such as mental health and sustainable education.

Through strong regional partnerships, you’ll gain experience in diverse settings, from early years environments to primary schools and community organisations. These placements allow you to apply theory in real situations, understand different learning needs and build the resilience and adaptability employers value.

We encourage reflective practice, curiosity and research-informed teaching – helping you develop as a confident educator who can respond to the realities of modern education.

Work placements

Professional practice is central to your development. You’ll complete high-quality placements across a range of early years settings, schools and alternative learning environments.

We work with more than 50 partner institutions locally and across the region. If you’re an aspiring teacher, you’ll have a mix of university sessions and work in schools. We know our partner schools very well and can match your development needs with your placements.

If you specialise in early years, you could be gaining experience in roles as diverse as safeguarding support and speech and language interventions.

Previous students have also taken part in international visits and placement opportunities abroad, broadening their understanding of global education systems.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have substantial real-world experience – not just theory.

I enjoyed the creative element of my course. We learnt about forest schools and parks and did an activity day in the nature reserve.

Education Studies BA (Hons)

Our students

The lecturers were always on hand to email you and all of the support has been really good.

I worked as well as uni so I did uni part-time and then I worked in a school as well alongside it. It worked really well because all of the assignments related to my workplace so it was based on the job that I had. I started off actually volunteering at a school because that’s what I had to have for the degree then about six months in, they offered me a job so the course actually helped me to get a job as well and I’m still there now.

Sophie Hancock

BA (Hons) Education Top Up

I have really enjoyed the course so far and feel well supported by the course tutors and University of  Staffordshire as a whole. The University holds student well-being, as well as academic success in high regard and there is a real sense of working in partnership to achieve.

Being placed at the same school for the academic year enables students to really become part of the school community and it is very rewarding to see the children grow and share their progress and achievements throughout the year. Over several weeks, the block placements provide a realistic school life experience and the weekly sessions in school bring the university pedagogical theory sessions to life.

Anita Smith

BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS

The teaching on the QTS course takes a student-centred approach as the lectures ensure that all the content is relevant and supports our time in placement. The lectures ensure that if there are specific areas we are unsure about (whether that be a curriculum area or a reflective theorist), we are directed to further readings and information is provided on Teams to support our development. I feel that the teaching in this course is well prepared and strongly supports our learning.

Bethan Longshaw

BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS

All of the lecturers are very approachable and supportive; they are always available to talk if you need further support or advice.

Ammie Bradbury

BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS

My first placement was in a nursery and I loved every second of it. The age range is the not the age I want to work with, but the children were all so lovely and they were all such a lovely age. The staff at the nursery were all so helpful and kind, nothing was ever too much trouble for them.

My next two placements were in schools. The schools had diverse cultures and were in different areas of Stoke-on-Trent, which was interesting to see, as one school was more financially stable than the other. I was able to work alongside the teachers and TAs within these placements to help children’s development.

Studying at University of Staffordshire has changed my life

The lecturers are supportive, encouraging and motivate you to do better. During my time at Staffs, I've grown as a person. I've developed a range of transferable skills and I've become more confident in my abilities. Making the decision to go to university as a mature student was the best decision I've made and I look forward to see where my education takes me in the future.
