Our graduates have gone on to lots of exciting destinations, including roles with fashion houses Tom Ford and Burberry, and graphic design work with Alpine Formula 1. Some also run their own ventures as designer-makers. It all began for them at University of Staffordshire.

Whether you want to be the architect behind an iconic building, the go-to graphic designer in a creative agency, a leader in transport innovation, a photographer who captures the moments that matter, or to showcase your latest creation on the catwalk, we have the degree for you.

What’s more, you’ll be studying in a city internationally renowned for ceramics. Stoke-on-Trent holds World Craft City status and is home to a lively ecosystem of creative businesses.

Why study with us?

We’ll encourage you to experiment, find your personal voice and collaborate across disciplines, using both traditional techniques and digital technologies.

We offer a bespoke approach, where you’ll get to explore the breadth of your subject before choosing what to specialise in for your final project. You’ll also have the chance to visit real businesses and work with industry professionals. And you can opt for a study trip abroad at one of our partner universities too.

During your studies, you could be:

  • Working with companies like Habitat and Vitra on live industry briefs, selling your products at Amsterdam’s Winter Fair, or attending master classes with art directors and social media experts
  • Taking part in internships, placements or international design competitions
  • Gaining industry exposure at events such as New Designers, Graduate Fashion Week and our very own GradEX Degree Show

Careers and connections

We have a proven track record of producing highly skilled graduates who’ve gone on to  successful roles across the arts and creative industries. To help you become career-ready, you’ll create a professional portfolio. You’ll also develop entrepreneurial skills as you learn about costing, brand marketing and selling your work.

We have a summer internship scheme with agency VCCP, while other students have secured work experience in Bali or with top brands like Porsche and Vivienne Westwood.

You’ll also benefit from our team’s real-world expertise in different creative disciplines. Our staff include professional artists, photographers, animators and illustrators, along with internationally respected designers who have worked with clients like Nike and Sony.

Work placements

Whichever art and design specialism you choose to study at University of Staffordshire, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a work placement. You’ll gain valuable real-world experience and make industry connections to give you an edge in your future career.

Each course has its own set of industry partners, which can provide exciting opportunities for work placements, ‘live’ industry projects, study visits, competitions and freelance work. These range from Maserati, Next and John Lewis, right through to Wedgwood, Johnsons Tiles and Portmeirion.  On some courses, there’s also the option of taking a paid ‘placement year’ to further enhance your employability prospects.

Industry Connections

We work closely with industry figures like the Crafts Council and Chartered Society of Designers, which help make the UK the best place to learn contemporary design and craft.

Our courses are designed to mirror industry practice, with students working alongside leading companies on live briefs, set by companies such as JCB, Westbridge Furniture, Halfords, Michelin, and Evoke Creative - whose client list includes McDonalds, Google and JD Sports.

We also have strong links with the local and regional art scene, who offer exciting opportunities to take part in professional projects and exhibitions each year.

The skills you get in art can be applied to almost anything. It is a much bigger part of our world than people realise.

Working on industry led projects, with brands such as SCP, Marks and Spencer and Wedgwood, acted as a learning curve enabling me to improve on my professional experience through live briefs and presentations.

The guest speakers are a bonus, as you’re able to listen to actual artists and get ideas in relation to materials and use them in your own way within your work. A highlight speaker for me was Raisa Kabir -  although I wasn’t a textile artist, I become more interested in the use of different fabrics and materials, as well as embroidery, after hearing her talk.

As a mature student, my course was the perfect pathway into the art career I'd always wanted. Foundation Art and Design is packed with taster modules, fantastic field trips, visiting professional artists and it's led by brilliant lecturers. I've gained insight and discovered skills that I can't wait to develop further.

Lorna Lakin

Art and Design Foundation & Fine Art

Being encouraged to create, market, self-publish and actually sell my own books has really pushed me out of my comfort zone and got me feeling like I'm really ready to go out into the world as a creative professional. The way the course builds you up slowly throughout the years made me always feel ready for the next step.

Maxie Oliver

Cartoon and Comic Arts

The course allows you to explore every avenue as an artist and really work out what it is that you enjoy. It also provides you with skills that will stay with you as you continue your artistic journey: how to document your design processes, how to visualise and present your ideas. It provides you with an essential base to build on as a creative practitioner. I can't recommend it highly enough.
