Our module covers the care of patients with diabetes in primary and secondary care situations, and your teaching and learning will be tailored to your current professional needs.

This module allows you to develop a deeper understanding of diabetes care and management from a range of healthcare perspectives.

Experts in the field support the module teaching to ensure you are learning the most up-to-date information in this fast-changing area of healthcare provision. 

The wide range of topics ensures a rounded development of knowledge which you can utilise to develop and enhance patient care.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: Individual Modules Care and Management of People with Diabetes Mellitus

Delivery Method

A variety of differing teaching and learning strategies are incorporated in this course including:

  • Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (48 hours)
  • 14 hours Lectures
  • 5 hours Discussion
  • 5 hours Interactive group work 
  • 5 hours Case studies
  • 1 hour Class tests 
  • 14 hours Specialist speakers from the diabetic care arena
  • 4 hours Clinical visits

 Guided Independent Study: (152 hours)

  • 82 hours Reading and study
  • 70 hours Assignment preparation

 Blackboard may be accessed as a support mechanism and resource

Course content

You will explore a range of topics during the module, including support issues, nutrition, pathophysiology, long term management and sexual health.

This module will also take you through the latest research and treatment options available, and the multicultural issues that are associated with diabetes mellitus.

Topics include:

  • Pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus
  • Clinical management and care of type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Health education/promotion issues and diabetes mellitus
  • The long term management issues of diabetes mellitus
  • Nutritional issues in diabetes
  • Psychological and social issues
  • Sexual health issues in diabetes
  • Support issues in diabetes
  • Research and treatment developments in diabetic care
  • Foot care, eye care and specialist care issues in diabetes mellitus
  • Multicultural issues in diabetes
  • All session content will reference policies, guidance and developments related to current diabetes care and management.

Entry requirements

Experience and interest in this clinical speciality. Working in a health care setting. Nurses, Nursing Associates, Midwives, Allied Health Professionals, Social workers, and Doctors can all apply to attend this module.

Learning support
