Rebecca Boden

Senior Lecturer in Children's Nursing

Health, Education, Policing and Sciences

I am a Senior Children’s Nursing Lecturer and Course Lead for the BSc (Hons) in Nursing Practice (Child). I have a wide range of experience within general paediatrics in acute clinical settings. I have worked on general paediatric wards caring for children with a range of medical, surgical and orthopaedic conditions, as well as working in high dependency care and children's cancer care.

Prior to joining Staffordshire University, I also held a post as a Clinical Educator in a busy Children’s department, where I would regularly teach a range of clinical subjects such manual handling, infection prevention and life support including the delivery of nationally accredited courses.

The wide range of experience I have as a nurse, allows me to ensure my sessions are relevant and provide students with real world experiences of nursing. I have a passion for simulation in learning an my experiences help to inform the creation of scenarios based on real life experiences. My current interests are developing student nurse professional identity, providing effective student support, clinical supervision and debriefing.

I completed my nurse training at Staffordshire University before embarking on a career in Children's nursing with a local acute health care trust where I gained a wealth of experience in a range of paediatric nursing roles including working as a specialist Children's Oncology Support Nurse for many years.

It was in this role, that I really developed a passion for holistic nursing and developed a range of extended skills which helped to improve the patient experience such as physical assessment, venepuncture and cannulation. It was also in this role where I developed a passion for teaching and this would ultimately draw me back to the University, where I had studied as a student nurse, this time as a lecturer. I teach a range of topics as part of the children's nursing undergraduate program and also support nursing students from all fields of nursing as part of the wider nursing team.

I am a Paediatric Immediate Life Support Instructor, which allows me to stay current in the care of unwell or deteriorating children, which I am able to use to support class sessions as well as in simulation.

I find the role of a course lead to be fulfilling, allowing me to support a wide range of students throughout their course to achieve their goals, and watching them cross the stage at graduation is the best day of the year!
