It has been the highlight of my time at university, and I am incredibly grateful to have had the chance to be part of such an amazing and successful team.

Nikita Dookhy, Team Leader

The team of aspiring engineers will represent the University at Formula Student 2026, where more than 100 teams from across the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia will compete at Silverstone Circuit from 15–19 July.

BEng (Hons) Automotive and Motorsport Engineering and BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering students have spent the past year designing, manufacturing and testing the single-seat racing car from scratch, balancing the project alongside their degree studies.

A host of local businesses have sponsored University of Staffordshire’s team this year, providing financial support, materials and equipment to help build the car.

The 2026 car features several major improvements to enhance its overall performance, reliability and efficiency, including an inboard suspension system, a side-mounted intake, and a revised driveline featuring a higher final drive ratio.

At a special launch event, sponsors, academics, alumni, and members of the team’s family and friends were invited to see this year’s car in action for the first time.

Team Leader Nikita Dookhy said: “We are honoured and grateful to be supported by a wide range of companies, without whom we would not be able to build and run a functioning race car. Their support and guidance are invaluable. We rely on our sponsors not only for high-quality products but also for professional expertise and advice.

“From the opportunity to utilise a state-of-the-art Cosworth data acquisition package, to industry-standard fasteners from Accu, laser-cut components from KMF, and high-quality CNC-machined parts from Bergen Motorsports, we are incredibly fortunate to work alongside such respected organisations. In addition, we are grateful for the opportunity to test at Rednal Karting, allowing us to evaluate our vehicle at high speeds and over extended periods, ensuring it is ready for competition.”

University of Staffordshire has a strong track record at the Formula Student competition and it is the third year that Nikita has taken part in the Formula Student competition, alongside several other teammates. The words ‘Once more unto the breach’ are emblazoned on the back of this year’s car, reflecting their determination to continually improve.

“Being a part of the University's racing team is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It has been the highlight of my time at university, and I am incredibly grateful to have had the chance to be part of such an amazing and successful team.

“Once the competition ended in July 2025, the team immediately began preparing for the 2026 season and has not slowed down since. From training new members to building the car and preparing for the static events, all while balancing degree studies, the workload and pressure have been immense and will continue right up until the competition. However, the team has thrived under these demands.”

Alongside on-track events, the competition involves static events with the competition’s governing body, the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE). Teams have to produce a detailed cost breakdown, engineering design report, and even a Dragon’s Den style business plan where teams pitch their car to judges acting as potential.

The team is supported by Faculty Advisor Martin Dunn, whose guidance has helped shape the team's continued success.

Nikita added: “Martin brings the team together, ensures we approach challenges professionally, and is always available to offer guidance when issues arise. The team would not be what it is today without his commitment, and we are incredibly thankful for the time, effort, and support he continues to provide.

“We are all excited to attend the competition this year. No matter the outcome, I am immensely proud of the team and everything we have achieved together. We will push ourselves and the car to its limits, giving our absolute best throughout the event. It will undoubtedly be a challenging competition, but as Martin often reminds us before we leave, we are already winners. The dedication, passion, and countless hours invested in this project are achievements in themselves, which every member of the team should be proud of.”
