This recognition reaffirms our position as the UK’s leading destination for games education. What makes this especially meaningful is that it’s based on real student work, judged by industry experts.
It has been named no.1 in the UK and 14th globally in The Rookies 2025 Rankings for Games Development.
This marks the second time in three years that the University has taken the top national spot in this highly competitive international league table.
Mike Acosta, Course Leader for Games Art, commented: “Being ranked no.1 in the UK by The Rookies for Game Design and Development, for the second time in three years, is incredible. Huge credit to our amazing students and staff who keep pushing creativity and innovation in games art every year.”
The success extends beyond Games Development, with Concept Art also placing no. 2 in the UK, reflecting the breadth and excellence of creative talent within the University’s Games Institute.
The Rookies is the world’s largest ranking of creative media institutions, judged by industry professionals and based entirely on the quality of student portfolios. It provides an authentic, independent measure of how well universities prepare students for real-world careers in games, animation, visual effects, and related fields.
Anthony Martin, Course Leader for Concept Art, said: “We’re proud to share that we have ranked 2nd in the UK at The Rookies Awards for Concept Art! This achievement is a testament to the creativity, dedication, and talent of our students and staff. Congratulations to them all!”
The Rookies is a global platform, featuring the work of hundreds of students from University of Staffordshire.
Professor Chris Headleand, Head of University of Staffordshire Games Institute, added: “This recognition reaffirms our position as the UK’s leading destination for games education. What makes this especially meaningful is that it’s based on real student work, judged by industry experts. It reflects the extraordinary skill, imagination, and professionalism of our students and the commitment of our staff to nurturing future leaders of the global games industry.”
