Well, I owe so much to the brilliantly talented fashion and design team at Staffordshire University! Annica has painstakingly advised, tailored and hand-stitched my Lady High Sheriff attire.

Julia Mitchell MA Oxon, High Sheriff for Staffordshire

BA (Hons) Fashion student Annica Stuart was tasked with customising the High Sheriff uniform for Julia Mitchill MA Oxon, after receiving a personal commission from the newly appointed Lady High Sheriff for Staffordshire.

The prestigious role of High Sheriff can be traced back to 7th Century Saxon Laws, when a “Scir Man” of great repute was chosen to resolve disputes and ensure justice was granted fairly to all.

Although the responsibilities of High Sheriff have changed across history, ‘Shrieval Court Dress’ still visually defines the traditional outfit of Velvet cloth, Lace Jabot & Cuffs, Steel Cut Buttons and shoe Buckles…plus Ostrich feathers to adorn a Lady High Sheriff’s hat!

To this end, Julia Mitchell approached Staffordshire University’s fashion department with a heartfelt plea: the High Sheriff of Staffordshire 2024-2025 wanted to be suitably, and fashionably, attired.

Supervised by Senior Lecturer Angela Devoti, Annica adapted the traditional uniform for the modern day and it is now being worn by Julia at official appointments.

“Collaborating with Julia Mitchell on this live brief gave me the unique opportunity to customise the High Sheriff outfit that seamlessly blends contemporary aesthetics with the timeless essence of this traditional attire,” explained Annica.

“The process involved meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every modification honoured its rich heritage while infusing fresh perspectives."

The High Sheriff praised the “world class” service she had received. “Well, I owe so much to the brilliantly talented fashion and design team at Staffordshire University! Annica has painstakingly advised, tailored and hand-stitched my Lady High Sheriff attire. A star was born and shall no doubt shoot far!

“Staffordshire University, Angela and Annica, thank you for such impressive professionalism, patience and kindness.”

Ange Devoti, Senior Fashion Lecturer, added: “Annica's commitment to reflect the heritage of the Shrieval design details of the High Sheriff uniform was encapsulated beautifully, combining both her creative and technical skills to meet the requirements of this one-of-a-kind commission. Congratulations to Annica and I would like to also wish Julia Mitchell all the very best as she embarks on her role as Staffordshire High Sheriff.”
