Timothy Hudson was offered a job before completing his degree

Now, knowing how big the networking industry actually is, I have vastly exceeded what I set out to do when I was in college. Even in just the last year I’ve managed to accomplish more than I ever thought I could.

Timothy Hudson, BSc (Hons) Network Computing

Timothy Hudson chose to study BSc (Hons) Network Computing as part of a five-year plan he set himself as a teenager. Now, he has graduated with first-class honours and was offered a job before completing his studies.

Accredited by the Chartered Institute for IT, the degree gives students the chance to spend a placement year working in industry and Timothy secured an internship with CISCO - a worldwide leader in IT, networking and cyber security solutions.

Timothy said: “One of the goals that I set myself in college was to work at CISCO. When I was looking at universities and they said that on this course they have all the CISCO kit and are a CISCO Academy partner, I thought this uni seems really equipped to teach all the networking principles that I wanted to learn.”

During his placement, Timothy helped to install new equipment, test network solutions for CISCO clients and build projects from the ground up.

“It was really interesting because you got to see new technologies that hadn’t been 100% released yet. It was a really, really worthwhile programme to be a part of. It opened my eyes to how fast moving the world of networking is and puts you a step ahead of other graduates.

“In a way, I managed to achieve my five-year plan and I don’t think I could have achieved that anywhere else!”

Timothy has since secured a graduate job as a Network Broadcast Engineer with company Techex and believes it was thanks to the wide range of knowledge he gained on the course.

“It was kind of a perfect match in all honesty. In the last year of this course, we did a lot of learning on a technology call Multicast…it is one of those technologies that people are adopting really quickly at the moment.

“It was good that the uni had the foresight to put Multicast on the course. I studied hard for the module on it, I did my final year project on it, and now I’m doing a job with it. Very much the course has been a perfect fit for this job.”

Timothy added: “Now, knowing how big the networking industry actually is, I have vastly exceeded what I set out to do when I was in college. Even in just the last year I’ve managed to accomplish more than I ever thought I could.”
