At Staffordshire University we are passionate about biology and want to engage as many people as we can with not only what we do here, but also with all of the biology that is around us all of the time.

Victoria McQuillan, Big Biology Day organiser

Now in its fifth year, Big Biology Day takes place at Staffordshire University’s Science Centre on Saturday 12 October, 10.30am – 4.00pm.

As part of The Royal Society of Biology’s Biology Week 2019, the event offers members of the public a chance to meet experts from across the University and local nature groups and get hands-on with a host of fun activities.

Visitors can try skeleton digging at the ‘Bone-anza’ stand, make their own fingerprint keyring, or learn about mosquitoes, plastic pollution and leaf chromatography. There is also a life-sized game of Operation, reptiles and small mammals, plus guided walks around the Nature Reserve – and much more!

Victoria McQuillan, who has helped to organise the event, said: “At Staffordshire University we are passionate about biology and want to engage as many people as we can with not only what we do here, but also with all of the biology that is around us all of the time.

“Anyone – no matter what your age or background – can make a difference and help to create a sustainable future. Whether that is doing your bit to tackle plastic pollution, creating a wildlife-friendly habitat in your garden or even volunteering with local groups.”

Budding bakers are encouraged to bring biology into the kitchen for the Great Biology Bake-off. Entrants are asked to produce biology inspired cakes, which will be judged on the day by their decoration and how well they capture the theme of biology.

The name of the biology department’s new mascot bear will also be revealed, and local charities and wildlife groups including Trentham Monkey Forest, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and the RSPB will also be on hand to offer information and advice.

Victoria added: “Last year’s event was a huge success with over 500 people coming to see the stands and participate in the workshops and activities. With our Big Biology Day now in its fifth year we’re gearing up to make this year bigger and better than ever before.

“It’s a really fun day out for all the family. There will be free parking on campus, so come along and join us!”

Big Biology Day takes place from 10.30am - 4pm on Saturday 12 October at Staffordshire University’s Science Centre, Leek Road, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2DF.
