About this project
The project aims to serve as a demonstrator site for net-zero innovations to increase public engagement through related events
Lichfield Cathedral is focused on achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the heritage building sector, both for financial sustainability and in alignment with the Church of England's goals. The project aims to serve as a demonstrator site for net-zero innovations to increase public engagement through related events. However, challenges include knowledge gaps and the complexity of integrating new technologies into historic buildings, which require expert support and decision-making that considers technical, social, and historical factors. To address these challenges, the KTP project will provide managerial and technical expertise to assess and implement low-carbon solutions, utilizing digital twinning and simulation techniques. A toolkit will be developed to assist with future interventions and help similar sites achieve net-zero goals. The Cathedral plans to offer workshops and events, positioning itself as a leader in net-zero initiatives in the heritage sector.
Impact and benefits
The KTP initiative at Lichfield Cathedral aligns with the Church of England's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. It aims to position the Cathedral as a role model for similar institutions by implementing a comprehensive plan based on research findings to reduce energy consumption and promote behavioural change. The Cathedral seeks to lead heritage decarbonization efforts, providing a toolkit and methodologies to facilitate informed investment decisions. In response to the global climate emergency, Lichfield Cathedral is committed to environmental stewardship, social justice, and community engagement by adopting sustainable energy solutions. The project aims to inspire local and international stakeholders, showcasing the feasibility of sustainable practices for other heritage sites. Additionally, the project will enhance the Cathedral’s revenue through improved visitor experiences and commercial offerings, focusing on modern sustainable technologies to reduce carbon output and operational costs while increasing visitor numbers.
Key technologies or innovations
The focus is on benchmarking energy usage and utilizing digital twinning for better planning. A dedicated resource will identify tailored net-zero solutions while considering the Cathedral's unique limitations. Understanding how to implement these solutions in heritage buildings, while adhering to regulations, is essential. The goals involve prioritizing and implementing identified solutions, with a target to significantly progress towards net-zero within three years. This includes obtaining planning permissions and collaborating with other heritage organizations to share insights. The aspirations aim for enhanced energy generation and consumption, allowing for significant savings in energy costs and carbon emissions. The Cathedral will act as a demonstrator site for net-zero initiatives and a hub for community decarbonization efforts, promoting skills development and hosting events to foster collaboration and innovation in sustainable practices.
