Graduating undergraduate student Elysia Interviews MSc Counselling, and former Psychology undergraduate, student Clara on her journey to professional practice.

MSc Counselling, and former Psychology undergraduate, student Clara.

What inspired you to pursue a master’s degree in psychology and counselling?

Well, I am a 47 years old student, I was born in Colombia, and I came to England when I was 27 years old. I was inspired to carry on my studies and to become a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor because I have always cared for people; that is my nature.

Can you share how your undergraduate experiences shaped your decision to specialise in this field?

The journey and the process that I experienced as an undergraduate student was challenging but very rewarding. I was blessed to have people who supported me and encouraged me to do better. Therefore, to continue to the masters was a wise decision because I felt accepted here at University of Staffordshire.

What area of counselling fascinates you the most, and why?

I love forming a therapeutic relationship with clients and the area that I have enjoyed learning about the most is person-centred because I believe that every person has the answers within themselves, and I love Carl Roger's theory because I feel I can resonate with that. I come from a very spiritual background and the core conditions of Carl Rogers have been present in my life. Now I can facilitate those core conditions in therapy room.

Was there a particular course or lecturer that had a significant impact on your academic journey?

Yes, Jay (James Vernon) was one of my lecturers at the time when I did the undergraduate course. I can honestly say that he is inspirational in his methodology. The way he explained the topics was amazing and so encouraging because he understood that sometimes it is the simple things that can make a massive difference. He was able to explain everything in a way that would inspire you to do well. This now translates into my practice where I consider every detail. Everything needs to be food for thought as everything could mean something.

How do you manage the emotional challenges of studying mental health topics?

In my case, it has helped me to find a great level of self-awareness, it is because of the course that I have found the tools to help me to go through difficult times. I manage the emotional challenges through my experiences of learning about myself and giving myself self-compassion and self-care.

Have you had any moments of self-reflection or growth while learning about human behaviour and therapy?

It has been a journey of self-reflection and growth; I have learned so much about myself as a person and about others. It has been an amazing journey, and I have gained so much from doing the course.

What role do you think culture and identity plays in counselling?

It is extremely important; I am from a different culture, and it has been lovely to be able to learn about other people’s culture and vice versa. For me it has been a great experience in Counselling, and I have to say it has been positive to hear how clients felt after our sessions.

What is one piece of advice would you give yourself if you were a new L4 student?

Trust the process! Seriously I remember hating that phrase but now after 6 years at University, I understand it. It is a process and sometimes we are in a rush to get to our destination that we forget the process and we don’t enjoy the journey.

I would tell myself to: Trust the process and enjoy the ride to my destination.
