Course content
You’ll take eight taught modules covering aspects of vehicle design, finite element analysis, advanced engine design, vehicle handling and aerodynamics.
You’ll choose a major personal project for the submission of a written thesis. The subject area can meet your career aspirations and interest.
Professional body accreditation
Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements
Modules
The tables provide an indicative list of the modules that make up the course for the current academic year. Each module is worth a specified number of credits. Our teaching is informed by research, and modules change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline. We aim to ensure that all modules run as scheduled. If for any reason a module cannot be run we will advise you as soon as possible and will provide guidance on selecting an appropriate alternative module.
Engineering Modelling And Simulation
This module provides detailed study of the process of Structural Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics and how such processes can be used to solve real-life problems. Design and analysis case studies and design problems will be considered, and the applications of different system implementation technologies will be discussed. Software-based modelling and simulation techniques to create complex systems will be studied. Industry standard software will be used for detailed analysis and complex modelling and simulations during this module.

Engineering Project Management And Research Methods
In this module you will evaluate your engineering prowess and project management acumen. This comprehensive module is designed to equip professionals with essential skills to thrive in today’s dynamic engineering landscape. This module covers five main areas: research methods, research analysis, project management, engineering ethics and team working. You will be exposed to writing research projects, structure and formatting of professional reports, presenting results scientifically to a technical audience; advanced project management methodologies and tools to efficiently plan, execute and control group-based engineering projects; explore ethical considerations in engineering emphasising the importance of integrity and responsible conduct.

Advanced Powertrains And Emission Control
The pollution levels in major cities are exacerbated by vehicle-generated emissions. Pollution is not limited to chemicals from exhausts but also includes noise, heat and particle emissions. This module enables you to explore the sources of pollution and technologies to minimise the emissions.Computational Analysis plays a major role in modern engine design and development. Indeed, experimentation with new concepts and ideas can be performed within a correctly defined computer model in a cost-effective way, leading ultimately to informed decisions to proceed to new prototype and hardware development. You will learn to use industry standard simulation tools to solve tuning and fuel-efficient designs.

Advanced Vehicle Dynamics & Applied Nvh
This module provides detailed study of the Vehicle Dynamics and NVH. It enables you to consider how such systems can be used to solve real-life problems in Automotive sector. Design and Analysis Case studies will be considered, and the applications of different systems implementation technologies will be discussed. Software based modelling and simulation techniques to enable the creation of complex vehicle dynamics systems will be studied. The module will also provide study skills for reviewing technical articles in the area of Vehicle Dynamics and NVH. Industry standard software will be used for detailed analysis and complex modelling and simulations during this module.

Msc Individual Project
This is your chance to design and implement your own large-scale project of investigation, experimentation and analysis. Your project will need to have practical and investigative elements, meaning you will have the opportunity to evaluate existing background, theories and knowledge as applied to a design problem or the development and improvement of new or existing processes and products. By using the wide-ranging skills, you have developed during your course you will be able to use practical measurement, design, implementation and above all, creativity, to devise and develop a solution based on sound engineering principles.
