This module explores the different areas of technology within computing and identifies core elements within the field to make an informed choice for purchasing, designing, and developing systems. In addition to these core skills you will consolidate your understanding of an operating system and will be able to commission and program typically Windows and Unix derivative OS as used within your chosen field. Considering Operating Systems outside of traditional x86 computing is also a key skill for fundamental computing decision making.

Software Engineering Principles And Practices

This module focuses on key Software Engineering principles encompassing the management of the entire software development process. In addition, this module gives exposure to current industry standard practices such as the Agile software development methodology and quality driven development. It provides theoretical and practical exposure to skills demanded by employers and is constantly reviewed to ensure you have everything you need to succeed as a professional Software Engineer.

This module focuses on aspects of advanced networking coupled with Operating Systems. The module is both theoretical and practical within its approach to topics. You will study firewall technologies, the AAA model (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting), as well as VPN solutions. As final topics you will investigate the latest commercial approaches used in security, and look at the Windows and Linux Operating Systems in terms of security features.

Machine Learning In Cyber

On this module you will learn about some of the main methods for data analysis and machine learning in the field related to Cyber Security. Different algorithms will be explored, and students will learn how to use them to analyse data, forecast the future, and assess performance. The module will look at how these types of concepts and technologies are applied to the cyber security industry, and how they are being used to detect malicious agents and actors across both hosts and networks.

Quantum Computing And Cryptography

Cryptography secures the world’s communications, we use it every single day in the mobile devices, applications, computers and devices that we use to talk to each other and interact with the world around us. Those devices, and the technology behind them are changing, and along with it the cryptographic methods that we use to secure them. Quantum computing is the bleeding edge of computational technology, and is on the advent of changing the way that we see everything – it is also going to have a big impact on how we communicate, and secure these communications. This module will give you the opportunity to explore these technologies, and how the forefront of computational technology is changing the way that we encrypt our most sensitive data.

Virtualisation And Infrastructure

This module looks at virtualisation of hardware and software and the effect upon the commercial IT market, infrastructure and the wider customer base. Within the module you will look at the hypervisor technologies which are currently used to understand how these interact with hardware and allow a virtualized OS to work either natively or through a host OS. You will also look in detail at the different virtual environments, with virtualised storage, hardware for redundancy purposes and operating systems, and learning environments. This technology does bring a number of benefits and risks and you will be expected to understand this and see where the benefits and risks are within this. The supporting infrastructure will also be looked at to give you a holistic view of how virtualisation will be used within companies now and increasingly in the future.

Dissertation

Each student must perform a large project for this module on a research or implementation topic of their choice from among those suggested by the project supervisors. Students will have hands-on practise organising, carrying out, documenting, and presenting a sizable original piece of work. The purpose of this unit is to give students a significant opportunity to combine material from all taught units they have studied as part of the programme in order to demonstrate the breadth and depth of their learning for the MSc. Every MSc project is supervised by a qualified academic staff member, occasionally with the help of a postdoctoral research associate, doctorate student, or outside industrial adviser or supervisor. Throughout the course of this unit, all students are required to meet often with their supervisor (and any co-supervisors).
